When the sun is shining and temperatures are up, it’s a great time to hike and explore Great Smoky Mountains National Park. But you’ll definitely want to find ways to beat the heat! Luckily, we've got a great recommendation: swimming and cooling off in the fresh mountain water! Read on to discover some helpful information before you take the plunge. Here is a list of 4 tips for visiting swimming holes in the Smoky Mountains:
1. Check the Weather

When planning your visit to GSMNP, it is important to keep an eye on the weather. Choose a day with the best chance of sunshine. While a rainy day at the park is enjoyable due to cooler weather and fewer crowds, you’ll want a hot, sunny day for swimming! Have a backup plan in place if needed: good thing there are so many fun things to do in the Smokies!
2. Dress For a Hike
Depending on which swimming holes you visit, it is a good idea to dress for a hike. Most swimming holes are located off of hiking trails or at least near trailheads for scenic hikes you’ll want to explore. We recommend wearing your bathing suit underneath some shorts and a t-shirt. Wear your sneakers for the hike and pack water shoes in a small backpack so that you’re ready for both a hike and a swim. Even if you don’t pack a bathing suit, the swimming hole can still be a welcome break on a hot day. Take your shoes off and dip your feet in at least!
3. Avoid Diving
Swimming holes in the Great Smoky Mountains are great places for leisurely swimming and floating on your back as you look up into the tall trees. Have races with your hiking group to see who can reach the other end the fastest! With that being said, visitors should avoid diving. The rocks near the water may be slippery, which makes them hard to climb and stand on. The water itself can also be shallow. The good thing about the shallow waters though is that visitors of all ages can enjoy swimming!
4. Stick Around After Your Swim

After you’re done swimming, dry off and spend a little more time along the water. Have a picnic to get some energy back. Eat your favorite sandwich and snacks while getting a better look at the scenery. Clean up all the trash before you leave!
Another fun activity in the water? Fishing! The vast rivers and streams in the national park have a rich fish population of trout and bass. Bring proper fishing gear and have a valid North Carolina or Tennessee fishing license. See if you can get the biggest catch.
