Are you looking for a relaxing thing to do on your Tennessee or North Carolina trip to the Smokies? Do you want a chance of scenery at mealtime? If so, you should plan a picnic. Let us help you start planning! Here are 4 tips for visiting picnic areas in the Smoky Mountains:

1. Be Mindful of What Picnic Areas Are Open

There are lots of picnic areas to choose from. There is no wrong choice because they are all surrounded by beautiful scenery. This is why picnics are great during every season. When choosing a picnic area in the fall and winter, keep in mind that some picnic areas may be closed. This is due to the hazardous conditions created by the cold and ice. You can always look over our operating hours and seasons to see when they open and close. Some picnic areas in the Smoky Mountains may close suddenly due to severe weather year-round. You can check the Smokies Road Info page (@SmokiesNPS) on X (Formerly Twitter) for the most up-to-date information on sudden road closures!

2. Keep Food Secure When Not Eating

If you plan to walk around the area before or after you eat, you should keep your food secure. This is because the scent of food can attract black bears. They have big noses and can track a scent from more than a mile away. If you do see one, you’ll be glad to know that they are accustomed to being around people. This shouldn’t come as a surprise because the Great Smoky Mountains National Park receives more than 12 million visitors each year. Even so, you should still maintain a distance of 150 feet or more away. You can also carry bear spray. It is a safe and humane way to handle close encounters.

3. Keep Your Pet Contained

If you bring Fido on your trip to the Smokies, you’ll be glad to know that they are permitted in the picnic areas. Do not allow them to run off and keep on a leash that is no more than 6 feet. They could cross paths with other visitors or even wildlife. Make sure you bring lots of water as well. You’ll feel good knowing your pet is safe and happy while you eat. Other areas where dogs are permitted include the Gatlinburg Trail on the Tennessee side of the Smokies and the Oconaluftee River Trail in North Carolina.

4. Bring a Camera

You need to bring a camera to your picnic. This is because the natural scenery creates a great backdrop for pictures. They include colorful wildflowers in the spring and leaves of fiery hues in the fall. The photos will look great on your mantle back home. When people ask about them, you can share stories of the fun times you had. They will also make for a cheerful holiday card!
