There are a lot of fun places to go on the North Carolina side of the Smoky Mountains. If you’re planning on going to Cherokee or want a new area to explore, keep reading to learn all about Smokemont NC, and everything this beautiful part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park has to offer!

1. Great Hiking Trails

If you love hiking, there are many great trail options in Smokemont NC. One of them is the Smokemont Nature Trail. This is a short but scenic loop that is 0.62 miles roundtrip. There are lots of animals and rich vegetation to see. The streams have narrow footbridges with handrails to keep your balance. A longer trail is the Smokemont Loop at 6.5 miles roundtrip. The loop intersects with many trails, such as the Benton MacKaye Trail and Chasteen Creek Trail.

2. Horseback Riding

If you don’t want to get tired walking around, you can explore the area on the back of a majestic four-legged friend. Smokemont NC has horseback riding stables that are open seasonally from March through November. The rides are open to all skill levels. The staff will teach you the basics. While the stable does provide helmets, be sure to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes during your tour. Another way to explore the scenery is by going on a horse-drawn wagon ride. No matter what experience you choose, call ahead to reserve your spot.

3. See a Historic Church

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has many historical structures, some of which are churches. When you come to Smokemont NC, make sure to check out the Smokemont Baptist Church (AKA Lufty Baptist Church). It is located down the street from the Smokemont Riding Stables. While the structure was built in 1912, the congregation was formed in 1836. Before churches were built, settlers had to travel long ways to have services together. Today, the church is open for visitors to explore. The interior has been restored, but the church still has the original pews. You can even have your Smoky Mountain wedding here!

4. Go Camping

After you spend the day going horseback riding or hiking, stick around and go camping. The Smokemont Campground is a frontcountry campsite that is open year-round. Visitors stay close to their cars and have access to toilets with cold running water. There are also food storage lockers available as well. There are 7 campsites, and reservations are required; they can be made up to 6 months in advance. Here are some important camping safety tips:

  • Fires: If you choose to build a fire, keep it contained in the designated fire rings.
  • Food and Trash: If your food is not in a storage locker, keep it contained in a backpack or tent. The scent can attract wildlife. Picking up all your trash helps keep the area beautiful.
  • Dress Warmly: Keep yourself warm by dressing in layers. The temperatures can drop significantly at night.
