Trailhead, Historic Sites & A Waterfall
The Porters Creek Trail is located in the Greenbrier area of the Smoky Mountains near Gatlinburg. The trailhead is at the end of Greenbrier Road. The parking lot at the trailhead only has around 20 spots, so it is a good idea to get there early! The first mile of the Porters Creek Trail is a flat gravel road that treats hikers to views of wildflowers in the spring, specifically yellow trillium. Catch views of the trail’s namesake here!
After that, you’ll come across remnants of two lesser-known historic sites in the national park: the Elbert Cantrell and the Messer farmsteads. Imagine how they would have been back in the day with abundant crops and livestock. Another place to check out along the trail is the Ownby cemetery, where many of the prominent settlers have been laid to rest.
The grand finale of the Porters Creek Trail is Fern Branch Falls. It is a 40-foot waterfall that is up against large slabs of rock. Take some pictures to remember the stunning sight. If you’re camping, hike another 1.7 miles to reach Backcountry Campsite #31.
