The LeConte Lodge, the highest guest lodge in the eastern United States, is preparing to build a brand new recreation building that is set to open in 2027! Exposure to harsh weather at 6,500 feet elevation had caused significant deterioration to the original recreation building, so it was recently demolished for the safety of visitors and employees. The exciting news is that a new facility will take its place! Here are the top 3 things to know about the new recreation building coming to the LeConte Lodge:
1. Beautiful Upgrade to Provide Hikers a Welcoming Space
The original recreation building, which was constructed between the late 1960s and 1970s, served more than 50 years as a gathering space and retreat for overnight guests from around the world! Much like the original building, the beautiful upgrade is designed to provide hikers a refreshed, welcoming space to relax, connect, and swap stories after a rewarding day on the trails. The new building will be constructed in the same character and spirit as the beloved original, continuing its legacy as a central gathering place for lodge guests. This will ensure that the magic of the LeConte experience continues for generations to come!
2. Unique Construction Process Due to Mountaintop Location
Another one of the top things to know about the new recreation building coming to the LeConte Lodge is that it will undergo a unique construction process due to the mountaintop location! There will be several airlifts scheduled throughout the year where materials for the transformation are delivered by helicopter (information on the airlifts and construction will be shared with the public as schedules are finalized). During these times, hikers will not be permitted anywhere on the LeConte Lodge grounds due to safety regulations and quick turnaround times of the helicopter.
3. Impact on Hiking Trails, Scenic Overlooks, and the Lodge Itself
If you are planning to hike along any of the approach trails to Mt. LeConte and enjoy the spectacular overlooks, you’ll be happy to know that these will all still be available throughout the construction process! Keep in mind that hikers may be asked to pause their hike briefly during active airlifts, but otherwise it will be business as usual on the mountain! The LeConte Lodge is scheduled to be open while the new recreation building is built, but there may be a short time during airlifts when guests are unable to access the lodge grounds.

The LeConte Lodge is situated on an open glade just below the summit of Mt. LeConte at an elevation of 6,400 feet. The lodge functions as a grandstand for the entire park and offers stunning views of the Smokies! This is the only place in Great Smoky Mountains National Park where you can sleep overnight on a mountaintop in a snug, permanent structure with hot and hearty meals on tap!
While helicopters may be delivering supplies for the construction of the new recreation building at the LeConte Lodge, you may be surprised to know that the normal delivery of lodge supplies is handled by llamas!
