You’ve probably heard of Chimney Tops and its iconic hiking trail, but that’s not all this area has to offer! As one of the most popular places to visit on the Tennessee side of the Smoky Mountains National Park, many people miss out on some of the lesser-known spots. Keep reading for an in-depth guide to Chimney Tops in the Smoky Mountains!
1. A Stunning Scenic Overlook

Before you reach the Chimney Tops Trailhead, you’ll find several pull-off areas along Newfound Gap Road (US 441) with great views of the Smokies’ towering peaks, such as Mount LeConte and Sugarland Mountain, as well as Chimney Tops. Be sure to read the plaque at the Chimney Tops overlook for details about the area, and snap a photo with your group before continuing on!
2. The Challenging, yet Rewarding Chimney Tops Trail
If you’re an avid hiker, you’ll definitely want to check out the Chimney Tops Trail. It is 3.5 miles roundtrip and has an elevation gain of 1,400 feet. The hundreds of stone steps make the trek challenging, so watch your step. Keep in mind that the last 0.25 miles of the trail are closed to public use due to damage from a 2016 wildfire, but the views from the new “summit” are still spectacular!
Since this is one of the most popular trailheads in GSMNP, parking spaces fill up quickly. Consider a hiking shuttle, so you don’t have to worry about finding parking at the trailhead.
3. Beautiful Picnic Areas
After admiring the views at the overlook or finishing your hike, you can be out in the fresh air for a little longer. Eat a delicious meal at the Chimney Tops Picnic Area! Pack some sandwiches or cook hot dogs and burgers on the provided charcoal grills. After eating, be sure to pick up all your trash and put it in the designated garbage cans. The scent of food can attract wildlife. The trash can also get in the way of the picturesque beauty, so do your best to leave no trace, keeping the area exactly as you found it.
4. Easier Hiking Trails & Hidden Waterfalls

If you don’t want to hike all the way up to the summit at Chimney Tops, take the Road Prong Trail, just over a mile from the trailhead. This is a shorter hike leading to two hidden waterfalls: Trickling and Talking Falls! While the route is short in distance, the terrain can be steep and narrow at some points.
Another great hike, especially for kids, the Cove Hardwood Nature Trail is located at the Chimney Tops Picnic Area. The easy hiking trail is only 0.75 miles and jam-packed with great views. Go up the stone steps in the picnic area and walk straight ahead until you see a junction with an arrow pointing to the right. Just follow the path all the way around. Listen to the quiet rush of the streams. There are also birds wandering around as well. Hear the quiet chirps of smaller birds, a vibrant gobble of a wild turkey!
