Are you an avid hiker who’s planning a visit to the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park? If so, we’ve got a great trail recommendation for you to consider: the Palmer Creek Trail, located in Cataloochee Valley! Keep reading to learn more about where to find the trailhead and things you’ll see along the way.

Directions to Trailhead

Starting from I-40, you will take Exit 20 onto Cove Creek Road and follow the signs for 11 miles to get into Cataloochee Valley. You can park near the Cataloochee Horse Camp and Beech Grove School. Space is limited, so it is a good idea to arrive early to get a spot! You also need to make sure that you have a Smoky Mountain parking pass on your vehicle before you set off. Purchase and print it off at home or get it at the park.

What to Expect

The Palmer Creek Trail is 6.6 miles roundtrip. You will start on Pretty Hollow Gap Trail and hike for 1.6 miles to the junction. You will follow the trail’s namesake as you wander along the route. The calm rush of the water will be a peaceful soundtrack. You may also hear the distinct chirp of birds high up in the trees. There are points where hikers must cross the water. Because of the damage from Hurricane Helene in 2024, the second footbridge has been damaged. Use caution when getting over the rocks as they may be slippery. Do not attempt to cross if the water is overflowing after a heavy rain.

Another fun activity? Hikers can stop and fish along the water. Make sure you have a valid North Carolina or Tennessee fishing license. Use the proper gear and obey the daily catching limits.

The Palmer Creek Trail ends at Balsam Road. The area is about 4,500 feet in elevation. There are more trails here to explore. One of them is the Balsam Mountain Trail. The route starts near Balsam Road! It is even longer at 20 miles roundtrip! At its end is part of the over 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail. While you don’t have to hike the whole way, you can continue on for a short distance after ending Palmer Creek! This way, you get to enjoy more scenery.

Cataloochee Valley History

Henry Caldwell was thought to be the first European settler to come to Cataloochee Valley in 1834. The Palmer family came here around the same time, and both the creek and the trail are named after them! George and Mary Ann Palmer were rich landowners who used their money to give back to the area and built a place of worship that still stands today.

The National Park Service works hard to preserve the legacy of hardworking settlers. Learn more about the Palmer Chapel Methodist Church and plan your visit to check it out and hike the Palmer Creek Trail soon!
