There will never be a dull moment when you come to the Smokies. There are fun activities to do as you enjoy the beautiful natural scenery and rich historical background. Read on to learn about some of them and create the best itinerary for your visit. Here is a list of 3 unique things to do in the Smoky Mountains:
1. Visit a Ghost Town

There is a Ghost Town located in Elkmont Tennessee. The land was initially the site of the Little River Lumber Company in the 1800s. Their trains brought tourists up to the scenic area, and it became a resort community. The residents loved relaxing in their quaint cottages and socializing in the clubhouse.
When the national park was established, Congress bought the land, and people were forced to quickly move out of their homes, which is why the once thriving resort community was deemed a “ghost town.” The National Park Service has worked hard to preserve some structures for visitors to explore.
2. Walk Behind Grotto Falls
Another one of the unique things you can do in the Smoky Mountains is walk behind Grotto Falls. You can get there by hiking the Grotto Falls Trail. This is a great beginner route, as the round-trip length is only 2.6 miles. Hikers will first see the 25-foot waterfall at 1.2 miles from the trailhead. While it looks breathtaking from here, get an even closer look when you walk behind it. This is a unique way to see and hear the power of the water.
Insider Tips:
- Use caution on any slippery rocks.
- Wear shoes with good traction to help you maintain your balance.
- While you’re here, see if you can find some salamanders. The Smokies are the “Salamander Capital of the World.” The cool and moist atmosphere of Grotto Falls makes for an ideal habitat.
3. Take the Road Less Traveled
If you love scenic drives in the Smokies, such as Cades Cove Loop Road, explore some new routes. One that we recommend is Greenbrier Road. It is located 6 miles east of Gatlinburg Tennessee, off of Highway 321. Relax as you gaze out at lush trees and calm streams. In the spring, there are even colorful wildflowers in bloom. The road also leads to a picnic area and multiple hiking trails.

Another less-traveled scenic drive in the Smokies is the “Missing Link" section of the Foothills Parkway. This is a 1.65-mile stretch of road between Walland and Wears Valley. It allows visitors to drive the entire 16 miles between the 2 cities. The “Missing Link” section is known for its many bridges that provide stunning views of the mountains. The Foothills Parkway as a whole is currently 38.6 miles. When you go, you should pack a picnic lunch. Stop to enjoy it at one of the many scenic overlooks along the way.
