Whether you’re a frequent Smoky Mountain visitor looking for a new place to explore or planning your first visit to the area, you should definitely visit the North Carolina side of the Great Smoky Mountains, specifically Deep Creek! Keep reading to learn more about the top 3 things to do around Deep Creek in the Smoky Mountains:

1. You Can See 3 Stunning Waterfalls

Indian Creek Falls along Middle Prong Trail

The Smoky Mountains are known for their stunning waterfalls, and you can see 3 of them when you come to the Deep Creek area on an easy 2-mile loop. The first one you'll see is Tom Branch Falls. This is a 60-foot high multi-tiered waterfall. The second waterfall to admire is Indian Creek Falls, a 45-foot waterfall. The tallest waterfall on this trail is the Juney Whank Waterfall, for it is 90 feet high. It is named after Junaluska Whank, a man who is thought to be buried in the area! As you explore the Deep Creek Loop Trail, use caution around the potentially slippery rocks around the water. It is best to wear closed-toed shoes with good traction. In addition to walking, you can get around this trail by bicycle, too! You can bring your own bike or take advantage of rentals!

2. You Can Go Swimming and Fishing

Another fun activity you can do in the Deep Creek area is go swimming. This is a fun way to stay outdoors while also staying cool. One place to swim is around Tom Branch Falls. This waterfall is not as tall as the others, so the water is calmer. Keep in mind that swimming is prohibited at the other two waterfalls due to the strong undertow. Deep Creek also has a river that is great for tubing. Relax and leisurely float in the water while you look up and enjoy the timeless scenery around you! You can fish in the river as well. Have a friendly competition with your travel group to see who can catch the biggest bite. If you plan to fish, make sure that you have a valid Tennessee or North Carolina fishing license!

3. You Can Camp at Deep Creek

If you don't want to leave the Deep Creek area after a fun day of hiking or swimming, stay for a picnic or even spend the night in the campground. Camping in the Smokies is a great summer activity, as the campground is open seasonally, from April to October. The campground has access to restrooms and drinking fountains. All you have to do is pitch a tent and relax under the stars. Build a fire in the fire ring to keep warm. You can also roast delicious hot dogs and marshmallows. During your stay, make sure to pick up all of your trash and leave the area as you found it. Thank you for helping keep the area beautiful!
