The Great Smoky Mountains National Park seems to have endless miles of hiking trails, some of which lead to stunning waterfalls. You won’t want to miss checking one out during your next trip! Laurel Falls is one of our favorite beginner waterfall hikes, but before you head out to explore the trail, here are some things you need to know about the Laurel Falls Trail:

Trail Improvements Finishing up in 2026

One important thing to know about the Laurel Falls Trail is that it is currently undergoing some improvements. In order to make these upgrades, the National Park Service closed the trail. It is projected to reopen later this year. Hikers can look forward to more parking spaces at the trailhead, new viewing platforms, and smoother hiking terrain. We’ll update you on the status of the improvements and the date the trail reopens when we get more information!

The Trail is Named After a Wildflower

Laurel Falls is an 80-foot two-tiered waterfall that is named after the mountain laurel wildflower. It is white with little pink spots. You can see the flower growing in a bush with little flowers around it. The best time to see wildflowers in the Smokies is in the months of May through June. Along with the mountain laurel, the area has thousands of wildflower species, which come in all kinds of vibrant colors.

While they may be pretty to look at, picking the flowers is prohibited. They are only in bloom for a short period of time, and we want every visitor to enjoy their full glory. Follow the Leave No Trace law while you’re on the Laurel Falls Trail (or anywhere else in the park). Leave the area exactly as you found it. Pick up any litter and replace any overturned rocks or branches. Thank you for respecting the beauty of the Smokies!

The Trail Receives 30,000 Visitors a Year

The Laurel Falls Trail is a very popular hiking route in the Smokies, as it receives 30,000 visitors a year. People love this trail because it is short in distance at 2.6 miles roundtrip. As for terrain, the trail is paved. This makes it ideal for strollers and wheelchairs. It is also great for people who can’t walk far. Laurel Falls is currently the longest paved hiking trail in the park.

The trailhead is 3.5 miles down Little River Road. There are parking spaces on either side. Purchase a Smoky Mountain parking tag for your vehicle before setting off. You will get a great view of the waterfall when you stand on the bridge. You can avoid some of the crowds by visiting on a rainy day. Just make sure to put on a jacket and waterproof shoes.

More Facts About the Laurel Falls Trail

  • Before the Laurel Falls Trail was a popular hiking trail, it led firefighters to a fire tower on Cove Mountain. The route was first paved in the 1960s to prevent erosion!
  • The waterfall itself has upper and lower sections. Hikers are able to dip their toes in the water at the upper section. It will be a great way to cool off on a hot day!
  • As you look in the water, see if you can spot some salamanders. They come in vibrant colors and are some of the most popular little creatures in the area.
