The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a beautiful place. Visitors love to be out in the fresh air exploring the timeless beauty. Proper planning is the key to a smooth visit! Keep reading for some helpful tips. Here is our list of 3 realities about the Great Smoky Mountains National Park:

1. There’s Going to Be Traffic

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most-visited national park in the United States, as it receives more than 11 million visitors every year. That means you’re going to run into traffic when you visit. Instead of letting it get in your way of having fun, be prepared to take things slow and soak up the scenery. A way to combat some of the traffic is by getting to the park early. You’ll also have the best chance of finding a good parking spot. Purchase and print out your Smoky Mountain parking tag at home, and you're ready to explore as soon as you arrive.

2. The Weather is Unpredictable

Another truth about being in the Smokies is that the weather can be unpredictable. It doesn’t have to put a damper on your trip, though. You just have to check the weather and bring the right gear. For example, bring an umbrella or raincoat for the rain and a heavy coat for snow. Sturdy shoes are also a must-have to maintain your balance on icy and wet surfaces. An advantage of visiting on days with adverse weather is that they tend to be less crowded. If you plan to venture into higher elevations, dress warmly because the temperature can be as much as 20 degrees colder!

Keep in mind that some roads and trails may close due to inclement weather. You can get the most up-to-date information on road closures when you visit the Smokies Road Info Page (@SmokiesNPS) on X. If the trail or road you originally planned to visit closes, it is wise to have a backup plan. There is no wrong thing to do in the Smokies.

3. You Won’t Be Able to Do Everything in One Day

There is a lot to do in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You definitely won’t get to everything in one day. However, this means that you can spend multiple days in this great place!

Spend one day doing a hike and then having a picnic after. There are a lot of great trails in varying difficulties. Spend another day going on a scenic drive or a bike ride on Cades Cove Loop Road. Stop to explore the historical buildings along the way, such as the John Oliver Cabin. Afterwards, check out the Cades Cove Visitors Center. The John P. Cable Mill is nearby. You can even spend all day and night in the park and go camping. Seasonal activities to enjoy in the warmer months include horseback riding and swimming! No matter what activities you choose, they will allow you to make great memories with your travel group.
