The winter season may bring snow and cold conditions to the Smokies. However, that doesn't mean you can't still have a fun day in the national park; it just involves a little bit of extra planning! We want to share some of our top tips for beginners visiting the Great Smoky Mountains in winter, so read on to learn more!
Tips for Winter in the Smoky Mountains
Here is a list of helpful tips for being in the real-life winter wonderland of the Smokies:

- Dress Warmly: Wear multiple waterproof layers to keep warm. Nylon and polyester are good options when it comes to material. Add accessories, such as hats, gloves, and earmuffs, to stay extra toasty.
- Wear Proper Shoes: Opt for boots with good insulation and traction. They will keep your feet help and help maintain your balance in icy areas.
- Stay Hydrated: Staying hydrated is important in hot and cold weather. It gives you energy for all your adventures. Bring a regular water bottle or a thermos with coffee or tea. Small snacks like nuts and fruit are good to have as well!
- Other Important Equipment: Along with warm shoes, you should also bring some trekking poles. They give you something stable to hold onto as you do your hike. You should also wear a headlamp because there could be less sunlight.

How to Stay Ahead of Potential Park Closures
In addition to seasonal road closures during the winter, some areas of GSMNP may temporarily close due to sudden inclement weather. This doesn’t have to put a damper on your visit if you stay ahead of the game. When planning your visit, try to choose the warmest possible day. If you venture into higher elevations, keep in mind that the temperature can be as much as 20 degrees colder.
On the days leading up to and during your trip, keep track of the Smokies Road Info page (@SmokiesRoadsNPS) on X. This is where the National Park Service broadcasts sudden road closures in the GSMNP. If you want to hike, we suggest picking one of the trails with a waterfall, such as Grotto Falls or Abrams Falls. The normally rushing waters freeze into spectacular formations!
