Did you know that the Smoky Mountains have a total of 150 different trails scattered across the one-of-a-kind natural landscape? That can make it difficult to decide exactly which trails you want to explore. If you’re looking for a shorter hike, you’re in luck! There are plenty of trails that offer the perfect balance of adventure and accessibility where you can get an up-close look at all the things that make the Smokies so special. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just getting started, here are 5 Smoky Mountain trails under 5 miles:
1. Kuwohi Trail
The Kuwohi Trail, formerly known as Clingman’s Dome, takes visitors to the highest peak in Great Smoky Mountains National Park at 6,643 feet! Not only is this the highest point in Tennessee; it’s the third-tallest mountain east of the Mississippi. Because of the 360-degree views of the area it offers guests from the observation deck, it’s one of the most popular Smoky Mountain Trails you’ll find. This paved hike starts from a parking lot and checks in at roughly a mile or so roundtrip. It is quite steep and temperatures at the top can be 20 degrees lower than surrounding areas at lesser elevations.
2. Gatlinburg Trail
For a trail that’s close to the bustling town of Gatlinburg, the Gatlinburg Trail offers a peaceful, easy walk for visitors of all ages! It stretches for 1.9 miles one-way from the Sugarlands Visitor Center to the outskirts of town. This mostly flat trail traverses alongside the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River and features beautiful natural views. This is one of only a pair of trails in the park where dogs are allowed (on a leash), making it a great option for those traveling with pets.
3. Grotto Falls Trail
Another one of the most popular, short Smoky Mountain trails, the Grotto Falls Trail is a perfect way to experience the beauty of the national park. This easy-to-moderate hike is about 2.6 miles roundtrip and takes you through a lush forest to the stunning Grotto Falls, where you can even walk behind the waterfall! It’s a great activity for the whole family and offers a refreshing spot to stop and cool off during the warmer months.
4. Baskins Creek Trail
Here’s another great option for those who want to see a waterfall in the Smokies! The Baskins Creek Trail is a lesser-known gem that takes you into the forest, starting from the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail until you reach the falls. Baskins Falls is a special 40-foot, two-tiered waterfall that makes a great place to stop and enjoy a packed lunch together as a family or group. It’s roughly 3.1 miles roundtrip.
5. Alum Cave Trail
Alum Cave Trail is one of the most popular Smoky Mountain trails and for good reason. From the iconic log steps to the stunning Alum Cave Bluffs and more, there are so many unique spots along this trail! The trip to Alum Cave Bluffs and back is about 4.6 miles, but you can choose to travel along further if you’d like. It’s a steady climb with breathtaking views of the surrounding area along the way. This trail is a bit more of a challenge but the views from the top are totally worth it!
